Telangana Adventures
Telangana's granite hills, lakes and forests make it a good place for climbing, trekking, sailing and camping, much of it within a short drive of Hyderabad.
Rock climbing
The Deccan plateau around Hyderabad is strewn with giant granite boulders, and climbers practise bouldering on them at the city's edges. The great rock of Bhongir Fort, on the road to Warangal, has long been used for rock-climbing courses run by the state.
Sailing on Hussain Sagar
Hussain Sagar in the middle of Hyderabad has active yachting and sailing clubs, and its annual monsoon regatta draws sailors from across India. Boats also take visitors to the Buddha statue on the Rock of Gibraltar in the lake.
Trekking and camping
The Ananthagiri Hills near Vikarabad have forest trails and camp sites. In the north, the forests around Laknavaram Lake, with its hanging bridge and island cottages, Bogatha and Kuntala waterfalls, and the Kawal and Amrabad tiger reserves offer guided treks and jungle safaris run by the Forest Department.
Water sports
Boating and kayaking are offered on lakes such as Durgam Cheruvu in Hyderabad, Laknavaram and Ramappa, and river cruises run on the Krishna at Nagarjuna Sagar and on the Godavari near Bhadrachalam.
