Where to find Indian food and shops
New York's Jackson Heights in Queens, around 74th Street; Oak Tree Road in Edison and Iselin, New Jersey; Devon Avenue in Chicago; the Mahatma Gandhi District along Hillcroft Avenue in Houston; and Fremont and Sunnyvale in the San Francisco Bay Area all have many Indian restaurants, sweet shops, grocers and sari shops. Most American cities now have restaurants of several Indian regional cuisines. The Chennai chains Saravanaa Bhavan and Sangeetha have branches in the United States.
Festivals and celebrations
New York's India Day Parade on Madison Avenue each August is one of the largest Indian celebrations outside India, and Diwali is a school holiday in New York City's public schools. Diwali, Holi, Navratri garba and Durga Puja are celebrated by community groups across the country.
Temples and culture
BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey, opened in 2023, is one of the largest Hindu temples outside India. New Indian films in many languages open in American cinemas in the same week as in India.
