Indian life in Trinidad and Tobago: food, festivals and entertainment

Trinidad and Tobago is home to 701,200 overseas Indians. Here is where to find Indian food, festivals and entertainment there. For the Indian embassy and NRI services, see NRI services in Trinidad and Tobago.

Indian food

Indian cooking gave Trinidad its favourite foods: doubles (curried channa between fried bara) for breakfast, roti wrapped round curry, pholourie and kurma are sold everywhere.

Festivals and celebrations

Divali is a public holiday, and the week-long Divali Nagar in Chaguanas, held by the National Council of Indian Culture, is the Caribbean's biggest Divali festival. Indian Arrival Day, 30 May, is also a public holiday, and Phagwah (Holi) is played with abeer across the country. See Visit Trinidad's Divali page.

Music and culture

Chutney music, born from Bhojpuri folk songs, has its own competitions at Carnival. India's cultural centre in Port of Spain, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-operation, holds classes in music, dance, yoga and Hindi.
