Indian life in Oman: food, festivals and entertainment

Oman is home to 678,837 overseas Indians. Here is where to find Indian food, festivals and entertainment there. For the Indian embassy and NRI services, see NRI services in Oman.

Where to find Indian food and shops

Indian traders have lived in Muscat for centuries. Ruwi and Muttrah have many Indian restaurants, sweet shops and stores, and Indian restaurants are found in every town in Oman. Saravanaa Bhavan, the South Indian chain from Chennai, has branches in Oman.

Festivals and celebrations

Muscat's Hindu temples, among them the old Shiva temple at Muttrah, mark Diwali, Navratri and Shivaratri. Onam, Diwali and other festivals are celebrated by Indian community associations; the Embassy's website lists them and its own cultural events.

Culture and films

New Indian films, especially Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil, usually open in Oman's cinemas in the same week as in India.
