Indian life in Guyana: food, festivals and entertainment

Guyana is home to 324,000 overseas Indians. Here is where to find Indian food, festivals and entertainment there. For the Indian embassy and NRI services, see NRI services in Guyana.

Indian food

Indian cooking is part of everyday Guyanese food: curries, dhal puri and paratha roti, dhal and rice, and seven-curry meals at Hindu weddings and prayers are found across the country.

Festivals and celebrations

Diwali (Deepavali) and Phagwah (Holi) are national public holidays, as is Indian Arrival Day on 5 May. On the eve of Diwali, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha's motorcade of illuminated floats travels along the East Coast of Demerara. See Guyana Tourism for events.

Culture

India's cultural centre in Georgetown, the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, holds classes in music, dance, yoga and Hindi.
