Indian life in Germany: food, festivals and entertainment

Germany is home to 364,013 overseas Indians. Here is where to find Indian food, festivals and entertainment there. For the Indian embassy and NRI services, see NRI services in Germany.

Where to find Indian food and shops

Every large German city has Indian restaurants and Indian grocers; the biggest Indian communities are in and around Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart and the cities of North Rhine-Westphalia. University towns have Indian student associations that run food stalls and cooking evenings. Saravanaa Bhavan, the South Indian chain from Chennai, has branches in Germany.

Festivals and celebrations

Diwali, Holi, Durga Puja, Onam and Pongal are celebrated by Indian associations, often with the Embassy or a consulate; their websites announce public events. Hamburg holds an India Week, and Stuttgart an Indian film festival, every year or two.

Culture and films

The Embassy's cultural centre in Berlin, the Tagore Centre, holds performances, classes and exhibitions. Major Indian films are shown in some cinemas in the larger cities.
