Berhampur: History, Geography, Tourism, Map

Baharampur is a city that lies in the district of Murshidabad of West Bengal and is it’s administrative capital. It is situated 200 kms from Kolkata.

With the invasion of the East India Company, the city of Baharampur was founded in the year 1757. The place has experienced the legacy of the British rule and with the Battle of Plassy the city came into limelight. The city continued to be one of the major cantonments till 1870. In 1876 the cantonment was transformed into the Baharampur municipality and became the head quarters of Murshidabad district. The famous Baharampur College was established in the year 1853.

Baharampur is famous for its silk weaving industries. There are other industries in Baharampur that includes ivory carving, oil seed mills, precious metal carving. But the major economy of Baharampur depends upon agriculture. Rice and jute is the primary source of revenue for the Murshidabad district. Rice and jute are traded from the city.

Baharampur is quite popular for its sweets. Delicious sweets like Chanabora, Monohora and Khaja are some of the attractions of Baharampur. Baharampur has been the center of attraction for decades and it has attracted tourists from the world over. It has a glorifying history and stills holds the charm of its past.
