Sangli is the administrative headquarter of Sangli district. The city of Sangli lies at a distance of 400 kilometers from the city of Mumbai. Sangli has flourished quite a lot in terms of trade and economy in the last few years. It is referred to as the “Sugar Belt” of Maharashtra. It is one of the important cities in Maharashtra which offers a number of educational options to the students pursuing higher education. The transportation system of the city is well developed. It is connected with all the other states through road and railway.

Sangli has a lot of historical significance. It was one of the 11 gun salute princely states during the period of British India. It was initially a part of the Bombay Residency and later became a part of the Deccan States Agency. Shivaji had conquered Sangli from the Mughals and annexed it to the Maratha kingdom during the year 1801. Chintamanrao Appasaheb Patwardhan I made Sangli the capital of his new principality. The last king of Sangli was Sir Chintamanrao II Dhundirajrao Appasaheb Patwardhan. Sangli became a part of the Dominion of India on 8th March, 1948.

Sangli offers a number of sites for the tourists visiting the city. Sangli is very picturesque and hence tourists visit this place often. There are several Jain and Hindu temples in the area allures a large number of tourists. Bahubai Hill Temple is one of the most famous temples in the region. The wildlife sanctuaries also attract a good number of tourists. Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and Chandoli Wildlife Sanctuary are quite famous for the various species of animals. Some of the other places of interest are Narsobawadi, Mahabaleshwar, Koyna, Bijapur and Audumbar. One can also visit the Ganesha temple, Sangli Wadi, Dandoba Hills Reserver Forest and Prachitgad Fort.
