Map of JalgaonNestled in between the Ajanta range in the south and the Satpuda range, the Jalgaon district is situated in northwest Maharashtra. The district is watered by the river Tapti and originates from the eastern part of the state and then drains into the Arabian Sea. It lies between 20º and 21º N and 74º 55’ to 76º 28’ E and is surrounded by the districts of Sathpuda Hills on the north, Nashik and Aurangabad on the south, Dhule on the west and Buldhana on the east. It is difficult to trace the ancient history of the Jalgaon district as it was under the province named Rasika. Subsequently it was taken over by the Farqui rulers and thereafter came to be known as Khandesh. In later years the Vakatakas ruled it. With the creation of Maharashtra, it constituted a separate district. Jalgaon is accessible by various modes of transport. The nearest airport to the city is located at Aurangabad. Jalgaon is also connected to Mumbai and other major Indian cities like Kolkata, Chennai, Surat and Delhi via trains. You can also drive to Jalgaon via National Highway 6. Jalgaon is home to several cultural and religious centers. Well known local attractions include the Pathadevi temple located at the convergence of the Purna and the Tapi rivers. The Pal hill station located at Raver and Unapdev, which has a hot water spring draw, a number of tourists each year. However, the internationally renowned Ajanta Caves are located at a distance of just 50 kms from Jalgaon. It acts as a base for tourists from different parts of the globe who throng to visit this World Heritage Site. Jalgaon presents an interesting mix of historical and natural attractions for the tourist.
