Guntur

Guntur is an ancient city of eastern Andhra Pradesh. The old French colony is situated just beside the trunk road of Vijayawada-Madras, making itself an easily accessible old city where nature has bestowed all her beauties – coast, hill and river side plain.

Guntur has a rich history dated back to 500 BC when Pratipalapura kingdom existed there as the earliest known realm of the south India. Then it was ruled by Nagals, Nizams, French and British empires. It is also known as one of the places where Buddha has spread his first wisdom.  It is said that the first ceremony of Kalachakra was performed by Budhha in this very place. In the last century the old city has extended its wings and now includes New Guntur and other suburban and rural extensions.

Guntur has a long list of tourists’ spots and places of interests situated all in 100 kms radius of the main city. The essence of ancient India is captured in –

- Amaravathi with its Amareswara temple, Swayambhu linga and Budhha’s Mahachaitya stupa;

- Bhattiprolu, the oldest empire of south India;

- Kotappakonda with its Brahma-Vishnu-Mageswara hills;

- Seetanagaram an ancient place of Ramayana;

- Chebrolu with its four-faced Brahma, red stone Nandi and Nageswara swamy;

- Ponnur with Hanuman’s monolithic statues and

- Undavalli caves of 4 AD with Vishu’s reclining statue.

Also the spiritual India has revealed a glimpse of its deep core in Viswa Nagar. The historical fort of Kondaveedu amazes with its structure and culture. The natural falls of Ethipothala with Nagarjuna Sagar dam is an amazing experience of natural wonder mixed with human stature. The Prakasam barrage, Uppalapadu Nature conversion and downtown city centers offer to taste the modern flavor of this ancient town.
