Face to Face with Namrata Shirodkar

There's been no major release after 'Pukar', save for that popular dance number 'Tun Tunak Tun' in 'Hera Pheri.' What's next?

Well, I've got a big release in D.Rama Naidu's 'Aaghaaz-The Beginning.' It's a great role

What's the role about?

It's this young, vivacious, bubbly girl called Geethika Rajan. She's this girl with a care-a-damn attitude and is full of life. Until, she meets Govind, played by Sunil Shetty. That's when her attitude to life changes and she understands what love is. The character has lots of dimensions to it

But, 'Aaghaaz…' already stars Sushmita Sen and Suman Ranganathan. So, where do you fit in?

Well, you'll just have to watch the film to find out where I fit in. Actually, Suman has a special appearance and Sushmita plays a cop in flashback. But, Geethika is the one who helps Govind get through the trials and tribulations in his life

What kind of creative satisfaction did 'Aaghaaz' offer you?

My entry in the film is with a song and after that there is this scene with Anupamji (Kher). This is my first film with him. He plays my dad in the film and he is a man one can learn a tremendous lot from. We share this really touching scene, which I really enjoyed. The film is full of these little things with co-actors, whether it is Sunil Shetty, who is a blast on and off the sets or Ramaji

After 'Hera Pheri,' you must have been offered a whole lot of cameo song-and-dance sequences.

Yes, you wouldn't believe it. I've had offers pouring in by the dozen. It's just these dance sequence. But, I have had to say 'No'. In fact, I was offered a special song in 'Dhai Akshar Prem Ke.' But, I had to turn that down. Same goes for another sequence in Rajkumar Santoshi's 'Lajja.' I think, Sonali (Bendre) is doing both of them. I had also signed a film in the South with Chiranjeevi. So, I had absolutely no dates left."

Why did you feel the need to turn them down? It means easy popularity and extra mileage, right?

Yes, it does. But see, I don't want people to say, 'Haan, dance karana hai, Namrata ko bulao'. It's very easy to get branded here. My priority remains good roles. Once in a while, it's ok. Like when I heard, 'Tun Tunak Tun' with Ahmad Khan, I was quite charged. So, the song, the maker and everything matter quite a bit. I need to assess how the song would benefit me in the long run
