Machilipatnam

Machilipatnam is a port-city located in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. It is also known as Masulipatnam or the Bandar city (port-city). The city is located in the south of river Krishna on the Bay of Bengal. It is one of the major port cities on the Coromandel Coast. Being on the coastal region the city is susceptible to cyclonic storms in the Bay of Bengal.

Machilipatnam is an old city and existed since 3rd BCE, since the time of the Satvahanas ruling dynasty. It was a burgeoning sea port in the 17th century for French, British and Dutch sea-trade. The historical significance of this port-city is significant. It saw one of the first British settlements in the Indian subcontinent in this region under the East India Company. During the Carnetic wars the British were temporarily expelled by the French from the city.

The city is known for its famous Kalamkari textiles, carpet –weaving factory and paintings made by using vegetable dyes. This port city was one of the major trading centres for the western explorers in the 17th century for its wonderful collection of Kalamkari art. Kuchipudi; a classical Indian dance form, originated in Kuchipudi, which is 25 kilometers from Machilipatnam.

Dattashram, Paduranga Swami temple, Agastheeswara temple, Sivaganga temple, Anjaneya temple and many more temples are situated in this historical city. Shivratri is celebrated with much fanfare. Dattashram is also known as Manginapudi. It has consecration 9 wells to bath within the temple premises. Paduranga Swami temple is a temple of lord Vishnu with a temple layout is similar to that of the Pandharpur temple.

The coastal city is well-known for the beaches. The Manginapudi beach is just 11 kilometers away from Machilipatnam. The beach has a natural bay with shallow water. Thus the beaches are safe for the swimmers and the surfers.
