Chunchura: History, Geography, Tourism, Map Located at the bank of river Hooghly, 35 km from Kolkata, Chunchura is one of the oldest cultural hubs of west Bengal. It was founded in 1579 by Portuguese merchants but later occupied by Dutch traders. Later, this strategically located port became a point of attraction of British and several conflicts occurred between Dutch and British troupes. Finally in 1825, the King of Netherlands handed over this river port to British Empire in exchange of some British holdings in Sumatra. Today this town is a well grown residential and administrative centre. The greatest contribution of this city was in the field of Bengal Renaissance. Being one of the oldest urban settlements of Bengal, this town became an important nucleus of intellectual and cultural growth. This is the birthplace of many poets, writers, philosophers, politicians of magnanimous repute and also the town took a significant part in independence movement of India. The statues of Mother Mary of the Diocese church, the Armenian Church, the Dutch cemetery, the Edwardian Clock Tower, Hooghly Imambara are representatives of various empires and cultures that have influenced this region. Sandeshwar and Mahishmardini temples are renowned for their architectural beauty and historical importance. Bandel church and Chandannagar French Museum are few kilometers away from Chunchura.
