Anantapur Spread across an area of 19,130 sq.km, Anantapur is the largest district of Andhra Pradesh. The rivers Papagni, Chitravathi, Vedavathi and Penna flow through this district. Anantapur derived its name from a large water tank called ‘Anantasagaram’ which when translated comes to mean ‘Endless Ocean’. It is believed to have been built by one of the ministers of the Vijayanagar king Bukka-I. Consequently, it witnessed the rule of the Qutub Shahis, the Mughals, the Nawabs of Cuddapah and finally the Palergar of Bellary. It was also under the rule of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan before been taken in by the British. Anantapur is famous not only amongst locals but also amongst people from different parts of the world for being the birthplace of the spiritual guru Sri Satya Sai Baba. It also boasts of a booming silk industry. Anantapur is also a popular tourist destination. The Lepakshi Temple in the district is one of the most visited sites in the state. Owing to its tropical climate, the best time to visit this part of the country is between the months of September to February. Anantapur is connected to the rest of the country by an extensive road, rail and flight network. Sri Sailam Dam is one of the major tourist attractions. Built on the River Krishna, it is one of the biggest dams in the country. The Bhramaramba Mallikarjunaswamy Temple at Sri Sailam is consecrated to Sri Mallikarjunaswamy and the deity Devi Bhramarambika. Surrounded by lofty walls, the temple houses one of the 12 “Lingas of the Fire” or the “Jothirlingas”. Other local attractions include Penna Ahobilam, Gooty Fort, Raidurga Fort, Hemavathi Fort, Penu Konda Fort, Puttaparthi, Tadipatri, Sri Kadiri Laxmi Narayana temple, Dharmavaram and Thimmamma Marrimanu.
